Campaign 2012: A Moral Choice
- By Faith Leith
Every campaign is viewed as historic by political pundits. Why should we believe this one is any different? The choices are simple:
Vote for one candidate and he will lower taxes especially for the rich, eliminate regulatory agencies like the EPA, and cut social programs that make people “weak and dependent on government” like Medicare, Social Security, public schools, libraries, etc.
Vote for the other candidate and he will do his best (with Congress’ help as he cannot do it alone) to repair our crumbling bridges and roads, develop sustainable green energy, clean air and water, encourage youths to educate themselves for 21st Century jobs, promote affordable health care, provide aid to wounded vets, those in need, the elderly, low-income families with children, etc.

You get the picture. A vote for Mitt Romney is a vote for the wealthy to keep more of their money. A vote for President Obama is a vote for the 99% of us who want everyone to play by the same rules, get a fair shake and pay their fair share.
This election is historic since our nation has not been this polarized since the time of Abraham Lincoln. And you know what happened during his administration. The two sides were unwilling to compromise which led to our Civil War and tore the nation apart. Was it for the same reason – racism?
Could be. When asked what our President has done that makes Tea Partiers so angry, the answers prove that they are looking for excuses to hate Obama. They say: He’s going to take our guns away. He’s going to raise our taxes. He’s going to bow to terrorists’ demands.
He has not done any of these things but Tea Party supporters are convinced he will if given another 4 years in office.
“To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.”
-Thomas Paine
Sometimes discussions with our Tea Party neighbors feels this way but we must keep trying. Perhaps the moral argument will have an impact.
Some Americans say we are a Christian nation. What does that mean? Does it mean our elected representatives act in a way that demonstrates to the world that we have compassion? Does revering wealth and counting only the rich as successful demonstrate Christian principles? Can a person be a teacher or firefighter and earn a modest income and still be a success?
Having read the Bible several times, I know that Jesus had nothing to say about gays and a lot to say about wealth. Anyone who wanted to follow Him had to give away everything they had. Jesus directed his anger at money lenders, the bankers of his day. He gave away free health care. He urged followers to help the poor and visit those in prison. He never said God helps those who help themselves. He never said praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. Anyone who says he did is not using reason and facts to guide their decisions.
By the way, President Obama struggled with the gay marriage issue and decided “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” was the scripture that applied to this stand. It is after all the most important commandment Jesus gave us. At least that’s what I was told in Sunday School.
This election will determine the focus of the nation during a turbulent time in the world’s history. It really is a moral issue this time. We need to take a few minutes to read the Constitution and maybe even the Bible. We need to do the right thing and re-elect President Barack Obama!
